Most recently, I was the first Digital Marketing Manager appointed at Absolute Radio, with responsibilities including digital strategy, digital marketing (social media, natural search optimisation and paid search campaigns), mobile (over 20 applications with downloads in the millions), and internal training/knowledge transfer.
Prior to this I spent almost a decade in print magazine and online publishing with Bauer Media (formerly Emap Automotive), in both editorial and marketing roles.
From January 2008 until April 2009, I was Community Marketing Manager across the Bauer Media portfolio, increasing community engagement on Bauer properties, and advising and implementing best practice for engaging with external blogs and social networks.
Prior to this, I spent seven years working mainly on the website for Motorcycle News (MCN). Having started as an Editorial Assistant, I was promoted to Reporter, Products Editor, and finally Web Producer, responsible for running the largest motorcycling website in the world and managing the online editorial team. During that time I also frequently contributed to the print edition of MCN.
I’ve also written on a freelance basis for magazines (Official Dreamcast Magazine), manufacturers (Dunlop), and websites (Eurogamer, Strategy Informer, Gamestyle). And I’ve been both Editor and Editor-in-Chief of online PDF magazine Disposable Media, until fatherhood came along!
‘Dan Thornton provided a particularly insightful introduction to online communities at a recent ALPSP seminar. The detailed analysis of the available options for publishing in its varied forms provided an exciting launch pad for the day itself and provided food for thought for the many academic publishers attending the event.’
Nick Evans, Chief Operating Officer, Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers
‘‘Dan is incredibly knowledgeable about the social networks in all their myriad guises. He also has that rare ability to enthusiastically inform the uninitiated without ever being patronising’
Julian Thorne, Managing Director, Dovetail
TheWayoftheWeb has existed for around three years, and in that time has led to links from sites including The Guardian (Feb 2008, May 2010), The Wall Street Journal, Peterborough Telegraph, Search Engine Watch, and has somehow established itself as a marketing/media/social media blog.
