Hello, I must be going…

October 12, 2010 By Dan Thornton

For me, it’s no longer just the title of a 1980s Phil Collins album, due to the fact I’m no longer with Absolute Radio.

It was a mutual decision, at a rare time when there’s a healthy break between projects. And going into a company of incredibly talented and digitally-aware people from senior management down to reception, I was well aware that the key objectives of knowledge transfer and integrating digital marketing throughout the business contained an element of self-redundancy at some point.

It’s a testament to the team at One Golden Square that in the 14 months I’ve been there, we:

  • Launched over 20 mobile applications which have had downloads in the millions, and driven sustained growth in mobile listening and engagement.
  • Connected with tens of thousands of new and existing listeners via social media, with each account now run by a key stakeholder in the business. Those connections have increased by a multiple of about x1000 in 14 months, with a corresponding effect on engagement with the Absolute Radio websites and specific content items.
  • Launched a number of new brands, including Absolute 80s, Absolute Radio 90s, Absolute Radio Extra (with Rock ‘n’ Roll Football), and the re-launch of Absolute Classic Rock.
  • Redeveloped key content areas of the Absolute Radio website for natural search optimisation, usability and user engagement with fantastic results.
  • Developed internal digital and social media policies which encourage engagement, and utilised an internal planning and collaboration tool.
  • And increased and improved the utilisation of paid search.

And that’s just some of the things which spring to mind…

It’s honestly been a privilege and honour to work with a group of people who are not only skilled, but also extremely passionate about building a new brand which is clear and transparent to both employees, and most importantly to consumers.

In addition I’ve also met and worked with great people from external companies, and if you’re one of them and I haven’t already thanked you, then I hope this counts.

And as for the future?

It’s quite an exciting time – I’m working on a some projects with various people, I’m looking over what I’ve achieved with my own digital projects in the past, and I’m taking the chance to speak to a whole host of new people about various opportunities, whether on a short or long term basis. So if you’d like to chat, please do drop me an email (thewayoftheweb at googlemail.com).

Home, online, and freshly inspired…

November 11, 2008 By Dan Thornton

Well, you’ll be glad to know I’m home and back online after my break, despite the fun on flying back to the UK during some strong winds – I’m sure at one point the plane was trying to land sideways!

I had a really good time introducing my son to his extended family, and having my first offline break of more than a couple of days in about as long as I can remember – I had the occasional twinge, but aside from uploading pictures to Flickr, I only logged in once to check my emails!

A small side street in Malmo, Sweden from my holiday…

Instead I wrote down any ideas and inspiration in a storage device which I believe is called a ‘notebook’, made of paper, and using a stylus which dispensed ink onto the paper, thus preserving the content. And I even had the chance to releax and read something called a ‘book’.

In a rush for the plane, and experiencing physically shopping for something to read for the first time in ages, I ended up with Richard Branson’s Business Stripped Bare: Adventures of a Global Entrepreneur on a bit of a whim, and I’m glad I did. I’d never spent much time considering the Virgin brands until now, and it turns out they’re an excellent case study for many of the principles the social media world are espousing. And considering Brand has build 8 billion-dollar companies from scratch, there’s some pretty persuasive proof!

And on the book topic, while I was out of the country, my former colleague Dave Cushman has published a collection of his white papers of social networking, media, and communities via Lulu, with any money going to charity. See more on The Power of the Network, here.

Anyhoo, the entire family is suffering with various strains of the traditional ‘return from holiday with an illness’ which seems to happen so much, including it’s most junior member. Plus I’ve got a few hundred emails to filter, 1000+ RSS items to clear, and various other things to update, upload and file – including some better sorting and tagging of my Flickr photos. I’ve finally invested in a Pro account, so I should really make more use of it. Maybe the final excuse I need to start upgrading my travelling kit with a smart phone with a decent camera?

I’ll start going through ideas, news, and picking out some of the most relevant Branson examples over the next couple of days as I get back up to speed. And in the meantime I’ll be continuing to learn how hard it is to administer a syringe full of medicine into a baby’s mouth without seeing the contents end up everywhere but inside the baby!

And now one last pic to retain the feeling of relaxation you get in a small town in Sweden when everyone else is at work – and it’s not exactly busy during rush hour!

Hello, I must be going… on holiday

Just a quick update that I won’t be online much, if at all, for the next week, so updates might be quiet until my return…

Funnily enough, searching for a suitable image on Flickr just gave me the above picture by James Cridland, whose blog and Twitter accounts I started reading recently – and the discovery of each was almost entirely unrelated!

Anyway, a good friend and colleague is aiming to supply some guest posts for here and www.thewayoftheweb.net while I’m offline, so you shouldn’t be alone. And as he’s a video expert, hopefully he’ll redress a slight lack of Seesmic, 12seconds, and Mobatalk coverage due to my lack of good looks a webcam.

And after the soul searching I mentioned in my last post, there are several really good things which have renewed my commitment to the site in the jaws of posting something once a week to just keep it going. So this week is a great time to contribute ideas, suggestions, topics, applications, tools or anything else which might be of interest, as I should be online long enough to access my email and even print off some ideas to work onn for my return…just drop your input to thewayoftheweb at googlemail dot com

Entering virtual employment…

November 30, 2006 By Dan Thornton

I made a decision yesterday, that post-Christmas I shall finally embrace the world of online PC gaming, and see if I can join the ranks of the Second Life real estate tycoons (see here).

Up till now I’ve avoided it as i saw a viable second income I could derive from freelancing the skills I have from my dayjob, and my gaming was purely for pleasure. That’s why I’ve avoided the joy of incompatible graphic cards by buying consoles. But the time for expansion of the StressedBadger brand is now looooooong overdue, and the only things holding me back are:

a: V21/Nestervices meaning no broadband at home.

b: Needing a computer which is capable of running a game made after 1990.

So having recently reduced some of my debts I’m going to be investing in a medium spec PC, to live in the main living area, and run as a media center, and business machine.

Whether or not I’ll end up making a million from a genius idea, or I get bored within a week, the fun thing is just getting involved and trying. It’s probably too late to jump on the gold farming bandwagon, but there’s got to be an unturned stone left, and I just need to find it.

Then if that doesn’t quite work, i can always write a book about it. (here)

Who knows, I might finally unveil a new host and design for this page, and get another high concept project off the ground…

In the meantime, I’m still flat out in my day job, helping with a huge online project. Mmmmmmmmmm content loading.
