Myspace, Photobucket, Shock, Horror

April 12, 2007 By Dan Thornton

Hmmmm.

Despite a little public outcry, most people involved in the media seem to understand why Myspace has blocked Photobucket-hosted media. I was going to list the obvious reasons and lessons, but Om Malik has done it for me, here.

On the flipside, it’s amazing how many sites rely on external, non-partnered comapnies, to host content for free, particularly video content. If Youtube started bookending clips, it’d be a pretty big shock for a lot of people…

Building and keeping a community

March 13, 2007 By Dan Thornton

Not a day goes by without the launch of a new social site, or the relaunch of a brand with social networking as the new focus.

This isn’t a bad thing, but there seems to be some pretty big problems in between what website creators think is needed, and what website users actually want.

Personally, I see it as the chance to set up everything for the website users to build their own village. You can make the land flat, put a river nearby, or even plumb in gas and electricity supplies. But you can’t force the community to come and live there, unless they want to. (Spot the echo of Second Life in that analogy)

Myspace is often derided for being clunky to use, but it was the first place that community settlers found and made their own. Once it become a sprawling city, the early adopters started moving to the Bebo, Faceparty and Facebook suburbs. The business crowd decided to start commuting to LinkedIn.

If you think about these people moving around the web, you can easily see ways to create better sites. Look at urban regeneration for driving people back to cities (redevelopment/realignment of websites). Look at how cosmetic changes such as trees and flowers can improve an area (Small design changes). Think about consistent navigation (Ever been lost in a big city…the London A-Z is a site map)

With the Web 3.0 hoopla including ideas of a virtual ‘Second Life‘-style web you can walk around, it’s easy to get caught up in the primitive geek fantasy of virtual reality. But people already behave in a way that echoes human traits in real life since man first evolved

Great use of Myspace by US cops

March 6, 2007 By Dan Thornton

Wanted posters are obviously so old-fashioned, so US cops have taken the plunge and given a 60-year-old bank robber his own Myspace page!

It’s got pictures, details of his exploits and a number to call should you recognise him. And the profile already has around 915 friends listed, which is probably more people than you’d get noticing a poster in a police station.

My highlight, though, is the choice of Citizens on Patrol from Police Academy for the master criminal’s profile!

My own convergence…

February 22, 2007 By Dan Thornton

I’m slowly, but surely, taking the web 2.0 mantra of convergence on board, and finally organising and converging my many web outlets and identities.

So if you’re on Myspace, feel free to add me at:
http://www.myspace.com/thewayoftheweb

And make sure you also add:
http://www.myspace.com/motorcyclenews
and
http://www.myspace.com/disposable media.

You can also find motorcyclenews on Youtube. Go to http://www.youtube.com/motorcyclenewsdotcom

Obviously I’m also on MyBlogLog, but it’s interesting that Jason Calcanis has suffered from some alleged MyBlogLog hacking. Thank God my obscurity should keep me safe from harm!

More convergence for online entertainment

February 13, 2007 By Dan Thornton

It seems like there’s a new story about media converging every day at the moment. Actually, it seems more like 20 per day. And most are offering something of interest.

  • StumbleUpon Video on the Ninteno Wii (Techcrunch): A good move for StumbleUpon to get word of mouth and entice all the owners of the new Nintendo console. And it’s a more efficient way of getting content that MS licensing individual companies and videos for their Live service.
  • Myspace is offering video filtering. Viacom is looking for a Youtube work around (NewTeeVee): Both these stories in the NewTeeVee round up suggest that the mighty Gootube still hasn’t won over content providers, or scared away rivals enough to be totally secure.
  • Last.fm secure music from Warner.(Downloadsquad). One music company has hitched a trailer to the social music network. How long before the others finally join up, particularly as the conversations about Digital Rights Management are generally allowing that the pirates had it right all along?
