Twitter’s decline?

April 24, 2007 By Dan Thornton

I’m still struggling to ‘get’ Twitter. I understand the concept, and why it might appeal, but I never seem to have the time, effort and inclination to push it any further than randomly updating my dull days. And seeing endless posts by the likes of Jason Calcanis and Robert Scoble have stopped inspiring me and started infuriating me. After all, how can I compete with a day spent acting with Josh Hartnett….

I know there are flaws with using Alexa as a detailed analysis, but as a general guide it seems to suggest Twitter may have peaked, and that maybe more and more people are starting to get overloaded… (The embedded image doesn’t seem to work, so either click on the blank rectangle above, or here, if you prefer)

Which is why, when someone suggested Social Networking as part of one of the brands I work with, I suggested a central database, which you could then select to syndicate out to other brands. So you might register on a film site, but by selecting your other interests when you registered, or by keyword selection, you could then get the appropriate tick boxes to syndicate your comment to the other sites you might have an interest in, without having to retype everything…

How not to do social networking…

March 23, 2007 By Dan Thornton

I finally gave in to the 500 emails I’ve received inviting me to join Tagged.com when it was actually from someone I knew and had lost touch with.

So i thought it was worth the risk to get in touch to pass on my email address.

Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig mistake.

The sign up gave me repeated errors, numerous faults, and tried to entice me to sign up for enough spam to feed Monty Python for years.

Then it repeatedly logged me out in IE and Firefox, and told me to accept cookies. When i did, it made no difference, except to the security of my work PC.

I finally log in, and get a load of messages claiming to be from my friend, but actually sent by Tagged via his profile.

Then it logged me out again.

I finally managed to browse for users, and managed to see two clones of the most common myspace pages, and then came to the conclusion that noone I could call a friend would have put me through that torture…

Tagged claims to be the premier teen networking site, but the figures I’ve seen suggest it’s the premier spam site, with less users than Myspace, Bebo, Facebook etc…And there’s a good reason for that.

Great use of Myspace by US cops

March 6, 2007 By Dan Thornton

Wanted posters are obviously so old-fashioned, so US cops have taken the plunge and given a 60-year-old bank robber his own Myspace page!

It’s got pictures, details of his exploits and a number to call should you recognise him. And the profile already has around 915 friends listed, which is probably more people than you’d get noticing a poster in a police station.

My highlight, though, is the choice of Citizens on Patrol from Police Academy for the master criminal’s profile!

Ebay not hip enough?

March 2, 2007 By Dan Thornton

The Wall Street Journal (article behind subscription) has reported Ebay is looking to hook up with Bebo in an attempt to attract a younger audience, as it’s current demographic remains in the 35-44 age range.

It’s interesting that they’re looking to tie up with a social networking site to achieve this, particularly after delisting Real Money Transfers, and raising the costs of teen purchases such as comics, video games and DVDs, as I mentioned in January.

Should this all go ahead, will it see a Bebo revolt? After all, Bebo gained prominence after the commercialisation of Myspace.

I guess it will always be a gamble to try and get money from any site perceived as a friendly place to network, but the secret may be if it looks like the Ebay option gives a perception of value to the users.

Always act on your ideas…

February 28, 2007 By Dan Thornton

It’s good to be back at a PC after a few days of illness. It means I’ve got a bit of catching up to do (thank God for Firfox Live Bookmarks), so I better get started.

A while back i signed up my Xbox 360 Gamertag to the www.360voice.com service, which posts a daily blog ‘written’ by your Xbox about what you’ve been playing.(Mine’s here btw).

Combined with the likes of Amazon and Last.fm, that got me thinking about how cool it would be to share everything you’re doing. Websites viewed, applications used, music listened to, videos watched etc, all in one place, and all automatically presented, so you don’t have to blog about it.

My only concerns were around whether an audience would put sharing above any privacy issues, and what happens when I accidentally click on a naughty web link and all my friends and colleagues can witness it…

Well, Slifeshare is taking that risk, and allowing users to share sites, music, video and whatever live app is running. Plus you can invite friends and track groups as a whole, with charts for top artists, sites, feeds etc.

I’ll be intrigued to see if this is a convergence step too far…
